Click image above for full size CD cover artJimmie's final album was preserved on CD in 2000 and released nationally by permission of Sony Music Special Products in April of that year... 16 years after it was completed. Jimmie finished this album on the night a drunk driver took his life: 4 July 1984. Independence day. This previously unreleased material is sadly once again unavailable. See the news page.
REVIEW"This CD points to the fact that Spheeris was quite willing to forge ahead in 1983 and 1984 - 'You Got,' 'Afternoon: Forever Afternoon,' 'You Will Be Coming Back' and other selections underscore his interest in the popular new wave sounds of the time. No, Spheeris wasn't trying to be Thomas Dolby, Duran Duran or Soft Cell; rather, he updates his sound by incorporating new wave elements and does so in an organic, unpretentious fashion. The album never sounds forced or contrived, and Spheeris gives the impression that he really believes in the songs. Had 'Spheeris' been released commercially in 1984 and had the singer/songwriter not met an untimely death at the age of 33, perhaps he would have been become better known. But that's only speculation; what we know for certain is that 'Spheeris' is a pop-rock jewel." Alex Henderson, All Music Guide |

Jesus
Unleash the thunder, tangle me in the light
Please us
Release this hunger we've hidden from sight
Light the fires of Babylon, for we are ancient kin
Swallow the seeds of Babylon
Stand naked in my sin
Jesus
Send me a stranger with dangerous eyes
Leave us
to crawl with the renegades in the night
Let the fires of Babylon burn us more and more
Swallow the seeds of Babylon
Suck the apple's core

I live in the jungle
Hunt through the lights
Tonight I'm a cobra
With you in my sights
There's beautiful motion
Out on the street
The jungle's an ocean
Of souls complete
It's alright
Throw it all into the night
It's alright
Sweep it
You're out past the boundary
Beneath the street light
I'm so glad that you found me
Looking back in your eyes
There's beautiful motion
In the way that you move
Your love is a potion
To soothe and soothe
It's alright
Throw it all into the night
It's alright
Sweep it
We live in the hunger
Live in desire
Feed one another
With fire

Tuesday afternoon
I'm just beginning to see
Now I'm on my way
It doesn't matter to me
Chasing the clouds away
Something calls to me
The trees are drawing me near
I've got to find out why
Those gentle voices I hear
Explain it all in a sigh
I'm looking at myself
Reflections of my mind
It's just the kind of day
To leave yourself behind
So gently swaying through
The fairyland of love
If you'll just come with me
You'll see the beauty of
Tuesday afternoon
Tuesday afternoon
Tuesday afternoon
I'm just beginning to see
Now I'm on my way
It doesn't matter to me
Chasing the clouds away...

Move me
Only you have got the powers
To move me
Far beyond the hours
I feel you
Like rain to flowers
In the drought
In your eyes I am free
In your eyes I have wings
In your eyes all my dreams are true
Dreams fly
Fill the sky with thunder
Realized
They still our eyes with wonder
Wake me
From this endless slumber
Pain and doubt
In your eyes I am free
In your eyes I have wings
In your eyes all my dreams are true
I love you

You turn you face to the street
Some longing starts to glow
You look away when our eyes meet
And say you have to go
You will be coming back for more
You will be coming back for more
Why do you question things you feel?
It's up to you, you know
To know that what you feel is real
There is no other road
You will be coming back for more
You will be coming back for more
You will be coming back for more
You will be coming back for more
Velvet glove rapping at my door
You will be coming back for more

All that you want
All that you need
Will come around in time
Listen to me
Seems we're moving faster to disaster
Serpents coiled around the game
But can't you hear the Master's laughter
As He's reaching for the reigns
Making it rain
Making it plain
That you got
You got
Everything
All that you hate
All that you fear
Will come around in time
You hold it so near
There's beauty in the eyes that hide no thing
Together we can make wonder awake
And the suffering sing
Making it rain
Making it plain
That you got
You God
Everything

You must be laughing somewhere
High up in the sky with a halo in your hair
Johnny Angel, when you needed them to care
They were not there
You must be laughing somewhere
You must be laughing somewhere
Now Mama's got a vengeance in her heart
Seems to me, they took her biggest part
Johnny Angel, how they tore your soul apart
Said they loved you from the start
You must be laughing somewhere
You must be laughing somewhere
Seems they only love you when you lose
Put you in the grave and then say you're in the groove
Johnny Angel, you know they'll never let us choose
Between what we know now and what we knew
You must be laughing somewhere
Oh Johnny
You must be laughing somewhere

Night comes, shines like a fake black jewel
Set inside the tooth of a street fool
The night is kind, it's hot and cruel down on
Decatur Street
They're waiting in the shadows there
The dreams you've been hiding
Decatur Street
And no one really seems to care
About the battle you've been fighting - yeah
Pretty Louise, she's got her hiked up dress
She's putting fingernail polish on her nylons
And her face is a mess
Catch that run, go find yourself a guest down on
Decatur Street
She's waiting in the shadows there
Louisiana sweet and funky
Decatur Street
And no one really seems to care
If you must be what you must be - yeah
Here comes Striker, he's got fire on his breath
Wearing his engineer boots, he's got his keys on the left
Looking for some handkerchief honey
Someone with some real depth down on
Decatur Street
He's waiting in the shadows there
A dream you've been hiding
Decatur Street
And no one really seems to care
About the battle you've been fighting - yeah
Pretty Louise
(she's heatin' a spoon)
She's got those wide eyes staring just like two black moons
She's just trying to deal with the cards that were dealt
She's trying not to feel all those things she's felt
(she smiles and ties off with a rhinestone belt)
And on the street below, Eddy and Striker
Tailing real slow behind some teenage biker
He slips up the alley and puts his hands on his hips
Runs his tongue across his hungry lips
He looks in their eyes and he starts to shiver
And the fog rolls in from the dirty river
It's the evening's attire...
and the night is gonna suck from you just like a vampire.

Black Baboona's singing songs
Soulful in the side streets
They drift like vapors
past the winos sleeping down on Main
"Forget your troubles, c'mon get happy,"
She's singing in the side streets
Waiting for a trick
Beneath an awning in the rain
She powders her face in the storefront glass
Anxiously waits each car to pass
And the rain comes down
Beats down on the ocean and the sleepy roofs in town
Pretty babies going down in dreams
On the stormy ocean rocks
Baboona going down on Pete
In the midnight parking lot
The rain comes down
Diamond James is dancing
Under his umbrella
He's barefoot in the rain
In the stark street lamp light
Tonight he will whisper and sing and scream
the things he did not tell her
Tho she left him years ago
He thinks he sees her every night
He'll break down and cry before the night is through
Fist to the sky, sorrow his crown
And the rain comes down
Washing off the makeup from this lonely clown
Gypsy's closing up now
She locks the doors and windows
Tucks her take-home safely
In a paten leather shoe
Says good-bye to no one
with a wave of ancient fingers
Stepping out on Main Street
Back into her blues
At home cats and dogs sit and wait for her
It's all she has left in this old town
And the rain comes down
Lulling her to sleep with a soothing silver sound
Like magic she is young again
Tumbling in the dream
He bends and gives her kisses
And a handful of moonbeams
And the rain comes down

Hear it in the hills
They're coming back today
Feel the ocean swell
And their music slowly sway
Golden, like the sun
They come rescuing
Now the struggle's done
And the flower opens in a dream
Hear it in the hills
It hovers on the wind
Now the clean rain spills
They're coming back again
We're coming back again
